Meet Our Team

Our team focuses on creative content, emotions, experiences and value creation with emerging media art technology. We integrate humanities, imagination, art of storytelling, aesthetics and design thinking at the center of all our art and design projects. We aim to creatively apply innovative technology to art and design with human touch and sensibility. CAT is looking for talents with interdisciplinary interests and skills from storytelling, animation to programming.

叶纪文 博士 助理教授
Dr. David Kei Man YIP

Assistant Professor / Associate Professor of Practice in Cinematic Arts / CMA Lab Director
Educator, Researcher, Writer, Director, Producer

Dr. David Yip is a veteran in the field of creative industries and media education. He has more than 20 years of teaching and management experience in the field. He is currently an assistant professor and an associate professor of practice in computational media and art at HKUST (GZ) with joint appointment in HKUST. He is also the Director of the CMA Lab. David holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Bristol.

 

After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley and the School of Cinematic Arts of the University of Southern California, David joined the Hong Kong TV and film industry as a TV producer. He later became a founding faculty of the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong in 1998. Since 2011, David joined the Open University of Hong Kong (now Hong Kong Metropolitan University) and established popular programs in Animation, Visual Effects and Interactive Entertainment programs as associate professor and program leader. He has led graduates to win important awards. As a writer, director and producer, David is active in applied projects, consultancy and advisory work for the Hong Kong SAR Government, creative industries, and higher education.

 

In terms of academic works, David has published several book chapters on interactive media and visual storytelling in Springer. His and his students’ papers have been published in ACM CHI, IEEE AIART, IEEE ICET, IEEE VIS, VINCI, AHFE, and other conferences. He is also a reviewer for ACM Multimedia, IHSED, AHFE and other seminars.

黄选阳 (Nolan)

​​​Nolan is a research member of the HKUST (GZ) Creative Arts and Technology Team. His practice based research interest explores the critical and creative potentials of creative-AI in art and cinematic narratives. His artworks have been exhibited in countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. He is the finalist of Arte Laguna Prize. (23'24 edition) He has previously served as a lecturer in Art and Technology at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts and holds the Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong.

宋俊蓉 (Vicki)

Junrong is a research member of the HKUST (GZ) Creative Arts and Technology Team. She graduated from Sun Yat sen University and later obtained a master's degree in film from the California College of the Arts (CCA). Her research focuses on generative artificial intelligence-assisted storytelling and narrative, as well as virtual production. As a director and planner, she has been involved in the creative development and production of various stage plays, films, and web drama. At this stage, she aims to further expand the possibilities of merging new technologies with art and explore the boundaries of creativity.

韩磊(Simon)

Han Lei graduated from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree in Future Media, specializing in audiovisual interaction. He is a curator and a new media interaction designer. As an art creator, his works have been exhibited in Beijing, London, Osaka, Brussels, and Hong Kong in the past. Currently, his research focuses on the integration of human-computer interaction with multimodal emotion computing as the main application, as well as innovative attempts in emotion-based future expression, interactive storytelling of memories, and user nostalgic experiences through new media.

She also served as the director for Guangzhou Television's food program Food Hunting in the Pearl River Delta. Her accolades include being named "Most Influential Media Professional of the Decade" by Dayoo (Guangzhou Daily) and serving as "Women's Rights Ambassador" for Zhaopin Recruitment. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Hong Kong Metropolitan University and BA in Film and Television from the Central Academy of Drama.

黄嘉杨(Jarry)

Jarry is a new media artist and researcher. He graduated from the China Academy of Art Secondary School, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts (BFA), and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MFA). He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computational Media Art at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Jiayang’s research sits at the intersection of art practice, technological media, and psychoanalysis, with a particular focus on individual subjectivity and the unconscious. His works often explore themes such as dream and memory, using AI technology as a novel approach for psychoanalytic exploration in art. His work and research have been presented at international platforms, including Ars Electronica (Linz), SNU Museum of Art (Seoul), Silesian Science Festival (Katowice), Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing), International Image Poetry Film Festival (Greece), and HiShorts Film Festival(Xiamen). Furthermore, his academic papers have been published in prestigious international conferences such as SIGGRAPH, ISEA, and AI-Art.

康心迪 (Cindy)

Xindi Kang is an artist and researcher whose work explores the intersection of art, technology, and narrative design. She is particularly interested in the study and creation of non-linear time and abstract spaces within storytelling, using these dimensions to reframe how experiences and relationships are perceived. With a Bachelor’s degree in Art and a Master’s degree in Media Arts and Technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, she combines expertise in traditional and interactive media to develop innovative, thought-provoking compositions. Her research and artworks have been exhibited at academic conferences and venues globally, including in the United States, Australia, China, South Korea and Southeast Asia. Through her research and practice, Xindi aims to create immersive environments where audiences encounter new perspectives, experience temporal fluidity, and navigate spaces beyond conventional linearity.

Griffin Ming-Xuan CHEN, B.Sc. Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, M.Sc. The University of New South Wales. Focusing on the integration of new media technology and computer technology with China's intangible cultural heritage, exploring new ways of inheriting intangible cultural heritage and conducting digital research, his Xuan paper art installation works were exhibited in the "DIFFRACTION FIELDS" exhibition, and his solo paper was recommended as an outstanding paper by experts at the first academic Exchange Conference on the Protection and Inheritance of Traditional martial arts in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He used to be a designer and developer at Season Game Studio, an assistant teacher in the Artificial Intelligence program at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University, and a founding technician at the Computational Media and Art Laboratory of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou).

张朝哲 (Charlie)

Charlie is a research member of the Creative Arts and Technology Team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). His research interests are based on AI empowering industries, exploring the creative potential of creative AI in multi-person collaboration and interactive development. He is the co-founder and COO of AscendFlow AI (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd., which led the development of the "Auto Multi-Agent" enterprise collaboration tool. Furthermore, He has founded Zhuhai Juka Culture Communication Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Qiaoxiang Culture and Technology Co., Ltd., which is located in the HKUST (GZ) Technology Achievement Transfer Center, focusing on cultural and tourism technology innovation. He is also the Youth Representative of the Hong Kong Wuyi Association and the Entrepreneurship Mentor of the Greater Bay Area Innovation and Entrepreneurship Incubation Base. He holds an MPhil degree in Artificial Intelligence from the HKUST (GZ) and is also the Vice President of the First Red Bird Alumni Association.

His research explores AI assistants that leverage large language models, data visualization, etc., to integrate personal historical and project contexts for task prioritization and real-time suggestions.

John holds an MFA in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong and serves as a research member in the HKUST(GZ) Creative Arts and Technology Team. His practice-based research focuses on the digital preservation of cultural heritage, with particular focus on Lingnang Culture. Currently a faculty member in Digital Media Technology at Shenzhen City Polytechnic's School of Communication Engineering, he previously served as Associate Department Head of the Digital Media Department at Dongguan City University's School of Creative Design, where he co-founded the New Media Arts program and developed its curriculum framework.

刘新阳(Xinyang LIU)

Xinyang graduated from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China with a BA in International Communications Studies and later obtained a master’s degree in Global Media Management from the University of Southampton. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Computational Media and Art at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Her research bridges theory and practice across transmedia storytelling, AIGC, human– and animal–computer interaction, and non-anthropocentric narratives, with a particular interest in how emerging media technologies are reshaping interactions between human and non-human entities. Her digital media projects exploring human–nonhuman relations have been exhibited at the Southampton Arts and Humanities Festival in the UK.

Her work explores how generative AI can deliver emotionally resonant, culturally enriched brand narratives to enhance user engagement and purchase intent. Caiyi earned a background in Business Analytics and worked as a Product Manager at ByteDance and other technology companies, where she developed expertise in AI-driven product design, user experience optimization, and data-informed decision-making.

Joshua Nijiati Alimujiang is an artist-researcher graduated from HKUST(GZ), currently at École Polytechnique in France. With a background in structural engineering, architectural design, media art, and extended cinematography, Joshua explores the intersection of art, technology, and sustainability. He has been a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers since 2021 and the Chartered Institute of Building since 2022. Serving in the Diversity and Equal Opportunities Committee at HKUST(GZ), Joshua has been participating in the community’s sustainable development since 2023. His focus on practice-based research involves art critique, and his previous works were exhibited and presented in the United States, Austria, Singapore, Japan, and Brazil.
